The CMLTA Standards of Practice outline the minimum professional behaviour expected of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs). Along with the Code of Ethics, they guide MLTs in their work and decision-making. Compliance is mandatory under the Health Professions Act, and violations may lead to complaints of unprofessional conduct.
These standards serve both the public and the profession by ensuring safe, competent, and ethical practice. They apply to all MLTs, regardless of role, and help assess professional competence. If an MLT’s actions are questioned, these standards, along with relevant regulations, determine whether misconduct has occurred.
The Standards of Practice complement other professional guidelines, including the Code of Ethics, employer policies, and legislation. Their interpretation may vary depending on an MLT’s role, such as educator, manager, or researcher. While some standards may not directly apply to every position, MLTs must understand how they relate to their work and ensure compliance.
The CMLTA does not dictate how MLTs meet these standards, allowing flexibility based on specific roles and practice areas.

The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) is the regulatory body for Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) employed in Alberta.
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which the CMLTA office is located is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous people. This is home to the Cree, Blackfoot, and Metis, as it is for the Nakoda, Tsuu T’ina, Chipewyan, and other Indigenous people. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our life as a community.
