The CMLTA Standards of Practice convey the minimally acceptable professional behaviour of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs). The Standards of Practice are used in conjunction with the CMLTA Code of Ethics in guiding an MLT’s practice and decision-making. The development and maintenance of these documents is legislated in the Health Professions Act and compliance with them is mandatory for all MLTs at all times in all dimensions of professional practice. Violation of any part of the Standards of Practice or Code of Ethics may be the grounds for a complaint of unprofessional conduct.
The Standards of Practice reflect both public and professional interests, provide guidance for MLTs and others in evaluating and maintaining competence, and provide a reference regarding the professional standards to which MLTs are accountable in the provision of safe, competent, and ethical practice.

The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) is the regulatory body for Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) employed in Alberta.
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which the CMLTA office is located is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous people. This is home to the Cree, Blackfoot, and Metis, as it is for the Nakoda, Tsuu T’ina, Chipewyan, and other Indigenous people. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our life as a community.
