Jurisprudence

Jurisprudence Learning Module

Jurisprudence is the study of the theory, philosophy, and science of a body of laws and encompasses the discretion, foresight, exercise of good judgment, common sense, and even caution in the professional practice of a medical laboratory technologist (MLT).

The CMLTA Jurisprudence Learning Module acts as a study guide and preparation tool for the jurisprudence examination which is a required element for all registration applications (initial and reinstatement) and practice permit renewals.

This module focuses on:

  • information and knowledge which is foundational to understanding the legal and professional duties and obligations of being an MLT,
  • the application of the legislation governing the practice of medical laboratory technologists in Alberta, and
  • information pertaining to Bill 21: An Act to Protect Patients, which lays the foundation for management of situations in which sexual abuse or sexual misconduct is committed by a regulated member towards patients.

The Alberta Federation of Regulated Health Professions has also developed a course with information regarding Bill 21 for all healthcare professionals. We recommend all MLTs review this course by clicking here.

The Jurisprudence Learning Module must be reviewed and affirmed annually prior to challenging the online jurisprudence examination.

Treaty 6

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which the CMLTA office is located is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous people. This is home to the Cree, Blackfoot, and Metis, as it is for the Nakoda, Tsuu T’ina, Chipewyan, and other Indigenous people. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our life as a community.
